Stand up paddle

The best stand up paddleboarding spots in Belgium.

Every year, stand up paddleboarding attracts more and more people. Whether on a lake, the ocean, a river or at altitude, this water sport can be practised wherever there is water. It’s a great way to combine physical activity and nature while exploring exceptional places.
Here are our top spots to practice SUP in Belgium.

Our best spots

1. The Brussels-Charleroi Canal

Inaugurated in 1832 under the reign of Leopold I, the canal linking the cities of Brussels and Charleroi offers very different panoramas and ambiances. Along the canal, the old towpaths are still present.

If you like to mix nature and industrial scenery, this paddle trip is for you.

2. The Meuse River

The Meuse is one of the oldest rivers in Europe. Paddleboarding on this river is like travelling back in time. You’ll glide past castles, historic spots, and beautiful residences, making this trip a feast for the eyes.

In the Namur region, the biodiversity is remarkable. Indeed, the river represents a real migratory corridor for birds

Area: 36 000 km2
Width: 80 to 140 m on average

3. Lake Robertville

The Robertville Lake is located in the heart of the Hautes Fagnes in the village of Waimes. It is the oldest nature reserve in the Walloon region. Surrounded by woods, the banks of the lake offer peace and quiet as well as breathtaking views.

The region is also known for Reinhardstein, an imposing medieval castle

Area: 36 000 km2
Width: 80 to 140 m on average

4. The Semois

A Franco-Belgian river, the Semois rises in Arlon and flows into the French Ardennes. The river is renowned for breathtaking views and delightful chalets.

You will certainly see local hikers as it is crossed by the GR16 trail.

Area: 1 350 km2
Width: 25 m on average

5. The North Sea

You may have already discovered the Belgian coast by bike or on foot, but how about experiencing it on a stand up paddle? The 66 km of coastline between Knokke le Zoute and De Panne is a very pleasant ride.

You will discover the seaside resorts from the sea and the salt air should be enough to give you a real change of scenery. When paddling at sea, we always advise you to wear a life jacket and to pay special attention to the weather conditions.

Tips for safe stand up paddling

Before going out, do everything possible to ensure that you paddle safely: always check your equipment before setting off, pay attention to the weather, and plan your route.

Always use a "leash" to attach your board to your calf, ankle or waist. We recommend using a quick-release telephone leash (pigtail line) which prevents you from getting caught in any obstacles.

Pay close attention to the wind: always start facing the wind, it will make the return that much easier (if doing a round trip). If you start feeling tired, don't hesitate to paddle while sitting or lying down.

We wish you lots of beautiful discoveries and fun on your board!
